Formation[]
The 9th Cavalry Division - StarMobile was formed in mid 2400, as a specialised landing force intended for rapid assault operations. Most of the 9th's operations have been conducted against facilities held and maintained by pirates and smugglers in the Sol system, particularly on Mercury. The unit's almost exclusive use of ballistic atmospheric entry, and the resultant plasma trails that surround their craft, gave rise to the unit's nickname, the "Tears of Sol".
Operational procedures[]
An MDFMC cavalry landing is typically conducted in two stages. In stage one, a high mobility, light force is deployed on the unit's trademark ballistic entry, to secure a landing site. Stage two involves the landing of the heavier elements on more standard entry vectors. This approach makes the 9th comperable to most Shock forces in the initial operation phases, but allows for more rapid escalation, as main force elements are included under the same flag.
