Dawn of the Dread[]

While the Domain may seem an unlikely source for great innovations in warfighting, the Martian dreadnought design capitalizes on Domain Naval doctrine. While small in scope compared to more conventional dreadnoughts, the Arbiter is substantially greater in mass due to thick hull plating and armor. The introduction of the Arbiter as a keystone of Martian defense doctrine spurred the development of similar vessels in the three powers as well, leading to the beginnings of the Dreadnought flagged fleet. Mars deigned to build Dreadnoughts after re-assessing their place in the galaxy. Cradled on the edge of the total unknown of unexplored space, and bordering on a nation priding itself on strife and conquest, the decision was made to establish the basis for a robust, defensively oriented navy.

 The Arbiter by design[]

At only 800 meters, the Arbiter is small by conventional logic, but boasts armor thicker than any ship in the galaxy. The majority of the vessel is shielded behind fifty meters of plating, and at critical points, this armor is as thick as eighty meters. Arbiter features a number of design innovations over more conventional MDFN vessels; she is the first vessel to forgo railcannon armament altogether, receiving an expanded particle weapons array and missile battery. The Arbiter fields drones in place of fighters, is protected by a prototype particle projection field, and carries a minimal crew complement through automation.

Introduction[]

MDFN Arbiter was laid down 3 April 2420, and completed construction in August of the same. Commissioning was carried out 17 September, and MDFN Arbiter set underway from Luna Orbital Shipyard on her shakedown cruise under Admiral Bernard Rease. Following a clean sweep, Arbiter assumed the flag of the MDFN 3rd Fleet at Mariner City orbital station. She engaged in combat in late November, near Pluto, against a massed fleet of pirate vessels, and acheived an easy, and total victory.

Design Specifications and Features[]

MDFN Arbiter, Registry DNG 001, was the most technologically advanced vessel in the MDFN at her time of commissioning. A brief summation of her armament and technology:

  • Mons Weapons Labs Mk XIX DnPEN (Dreadnought Perticle Emitter Network) 360 Degree, six-axis coverage, multiple target simultaneous engagement capable.
  • 30 x 10 cell VLS, 15 Dorsal, 15 Ventral
  • Mons Ship Systems Department "Bulwark" Particle Projection Field

As a result of massive improvements to shipboard automation, the Arbiter is manned by a crew of only 270 enlisted persons and 30 officers, and 100 marines. Maximum operational capacity is 1200, with a maximum life support capacity of 3200.
